Effects of demographic change on the the situation of skilled workers in central Germany
Abstract
"On account of the continual decline in the population of employable age, less people will be available to the labour market of the future in purely numerical terms. Many interpret this as a clear signal for a shortage of skilled workers. However, this way of seeing the matter is too shortsighted. In this publication we present various indicators which would be in a position to identify possible shortages in skilled workers in central Germany - but these also do not offer a clear picture. In particular the development in wages, which is seen as the most important balancing mechanism between supply of labour and demand for labour, does not give any indication of a shortage where central Germany is concerned."
