Ageing populations, globalization and the labour market : comparing late working life and retirement in modern societies. Introduction

Abstract

One of the greatest challenges for European and North American societies is demographic change and its effects on the pension systems. The present introductory chapter provides the conceptual framework for the international comparison of ten country studies that are presented in this collected volume. The influence of changes at the macro level that affect the situation of older persons is discussed, including the role of differing national framework conditions. Specific hypotheses for the employment and income situation of older persons in the ten country studies are summarized in an overview table. (IAB)
