Schichtspezifische Präferenzen oder sozioökonomisches Entscheidungskalkül?

Abstract

"Sociological research in education has recently focused on the question of how educational decisions concerning a child's school career are made. Rarely, however, do we find an analysis of the relevance of parents' educational preferences and aspirations in the transition to secondary schools. The present article focuses on just this question. The results show that it would be wrong to assert that educational decisions may be explained by subculture-specific preferences alone. At the same time, however, class-specific cost-benefit-calculations by the parents, too, do only partly explain educational decisions. Rather, in their decision-finding regarding their child's school career, parents are guided by rational calculations as well as by different preferences and educational plans."
