Earnings in the nursing occupations in Germany 1998-2003 : a study with the employment panel of the federal employment services

Abstract

"This study analyses earnings in the nursing occupations in Germany in the years 1998 - 2003. The database used for this empirical study is the Employment Panel of the Federal Employment Services, which contains variables both at the individual and the establishment level. The most important results can be summarized as follows: male and female nurses receive the highest gross earnings both in Western and Eastern Germany in hospitals, whereas the lowest gross earnings are paid to workers in mobile social services. Female nurses in the age between 41 and 50 years receive the highest earnings in Western Germany, whereas the lowest are given to those in the age under 22 years in Eastern Germany. In smaller nursing institutions, the average gross earning was 1460 per month. Furthermore, a comparison between Western and Eastern Germany, which considers the adjustment in the tariffs between the two regions, shows that the spread between the lowest and the highest earnings is approximately 1300. With respect to occupation, size of institution and age, earnings differentials increased between the years 1998 and 2003 both in Western and Eastern Germany." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
