Baden-Württemberg - strong in research with a focus on traditional industries
Abstract
"As in many other western German federal states, employment in Baden-Württemberg decreased between 1993 and 2001. The rate of employment decrease is similar to the western German average. The industrial structure is determined by the so-called key industries - vehicle construction, machine construction, electrical engineering and metal processing. Only the first of these has had a positive effect on employment. Because it is necessary to have qualified employees in these industries so that innovations can be carried out, the average qualification level of those employed in Baden-Wurttemberg lies above that for western Germany. This has a positive effect on employment development. A relatively high wage rates has, however, a negative effect on employment. The location effects have the strongest positive influence on employment." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
