Analysis of Thüringen - industrial structure and regional wage level crucial for employment development

Abstract

"Between 1995 and 2001, Thuringia had a better employment record than eastern Germany as a whole. This paper analyses the determinants of this comparatively positive development. Our results show that all determinants have positive effects on employment in Thuringia, whereas their effects in other federal states are mixed. One important explanation of why certain regions in Thüringen perform well is connected to the way in which regional economies were restructured in the transformation process. In contrast to other federal states, the restructuring process focused on industries traditionally located in the region." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
