Long-term unemployment from the employer’s perspective: Employers‘ reservations against long-term unemployed are slightly lower in economic downturns

Abstract

"Study or training?" – this question is not only faced by young people, it is also frequently discussed in politics and the press. At the same time, the issue of a shortage of skilled workers is becoming increasingly prevalent. High school graduates, for example, often decide in favor of studying rather than training because of potential earnings opportunities, among other reasons. In calculating gross lifetime earnings for full-time employees, the author considers not only the formal qualifications of the employees but also the level of requirements of the occupation performed. The results of the study show: Although it is true on average that the highest gross lifetime earnings are achieved with a degree, this is not always the case." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
