The impact of studying abroad during higher education
Project duration: 01.09.2014 to 31.12.2016
Abstract
Studying abroad for a period of time during higher education has become an important phenomenon and a relatively common experience in Europe in recent decades. However, the evidence on the effects of spending a period abroad for studies during higher education is scarce in economic research. This research project aims at assessing the impacts of this international experience on two main types of outcomes: first, on the future international mobility of young people in their early work career; second, on labor market performance in terms of school-to-work transition, employability and earnings. These questions are examined in a multinational perspective, using a survey on higher education graduates collected five years after graduation in 16 European countries. The findings from this project are expected to have direct policy implications, in terms of the design of these study abroad programmes.
