Project duration: 19.08.2014 to 31.12.2016
Abstract
In the framework of this project industrial and regional mobility of workers leaving the mature industry shipbuilding between Sweden and Germany by cross-using datasets of both countries. The first part of this project consisted of analyzing the mobility patterns of employees that switched from the shipbuilding industries to other industries or stayed in this industry. For this purpose, industry employment histories of all individuals at some point affiliated with the dismantling Swedish shipbuilding industry 1970-2000 were followed. It was analyezed the situation of the individual workers leaving shipbuilding through investigating to what extent they were employed at all, tended to move to related sectors inside or outside the region, and whether such moves were beneficial for the individuals. By cross-using German and Swedish data, the findings indicate a notable impact of regional industrial structure on the movement and success of individuals, and that individuals moving from shipbuilding to related sectors benefit more from moving than others. The second part of the project will be conducted by analyzing the industrial and regional mobility patterns of leavers of the German shipbuilding industry from the 1970s to the 1990s. The outcomes will be compared to the Swedish case.
