Frontier Technology Skills at the German Labour Market
Project duration: 01.03.2025 to 28.02.2027
Abstract
The rapid evolution of technology is reshaping labor markets, driving demand for new skills, and transforming job profiles. This paper introduces a novel skill- based measure to rank occupations by their technology intensity, distinguishing between manual, digital, and frontier technologies (e.g., AI, AR, 3D printing). Leveraging natural language processing, generative AI, and machine learning, we classify job competencies using the German BERUFENET database. Preliminary findings indicate that frontier technologies are concentrated in specialized roles, while digitalization is widespread. By linking these measures to labor market data, we track the evolution of digital and frontier skills over time and assess their coevolution with wages, employment, and industry-specific trends.
