The transition from school to vocational training and employment and finding one’s way in the world of work are key junctures in a person’s life. Young people’s choices impact their opportunities for personal development, their social status and their financial security.
What training or degree courses offer young people good long-term prospects in the labour market? How does a young person’s social background affect their chances in the job market? What does integration look like for young people with a migrant background in terms of their schooling and career? What career pathways are there for young people with disabilities? What are the causes and consequences of disengagement from school and young people not taking up vocational training? What preventative strategies and approaches can be used to combat these phenomena? IAB’s research focuses on these and other questions of relevance for ‘Young people on the cusp of working life’.
This special feature provides a link to publications and projects by the IAB on this topic.
The information touches on many other aspects such as structural data, trends and prospects for the apprenticeship market, determinants of youth unemployment and counter-strategies at national and international level, findings to explain career choices, motives for certain groups of people choosing a particular career, factors influencing decision-making and determinants of premature contract termination and dropping out of vocational training.
