Working in later life

The statutory retirement age is currently the subject of much debate. The process of gradually raising it to 67 began in 2012. Will this be enough to tackle the challenges of demographic change, or will it be necessary to consider whether people should continue working for even longer? And will older people really remain in work for longer as a result? After all, many retire early anyway. At the same time, we are seeing a rise in the number of people drawing a pension but continuing to work. Does this indicate an increasing prevalence of poverty in later life? Or are there other reasons for this trend? What are the alternatives for a more flexible exit from working life? And to what extent are companies willing to employ older workers?

We have compiled a list of IAB publications and projects that help to answer these and other questions you may have about working in later life.
