Research ethics
IAB strives to provide excellent scientific research. The institute supports good academic practice, the observance of regulations in terms of data protection as well as the adherence to ethic principles when performing empirical studies and handling the data used for this purpose. In every phase of the research process - from formulating the research questions and drafting the study concept up to the collection and evaluation of data and the interpretation, usage and publication of the research results - the institute strives to guarantee the dignity and rights of the study groups.
The IAB Ethics Codex serves as the guideline and reflection source for researchers to develop their projects, and shall raise their awareness for research ethics-related issues in their work.
Quality assurance in research
IAB has a quality assurance representative in the research department. Her task is to advise the Directorate on all matters relevant to scientific quality assurance, and to enhance the communication regarding quality management processes within the institute.

Safeguarding good scientific practice at the IAB
Integrity and diligence are the top principles of good scientific work. Moreover, only research based on these principles and which is independent of interests, influence and power relationships can be the basis for reliable counselling. IAB creates the necessary prerequisites so that the principles of good scientific practice are observed in everyday research work.
In the document "Erklärung zur Sicherung der guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis" (Explanation on the safeguarding of good scientific practice) (PDF), IAB describes these principles, which are mandatory for all researchers at the institute.
The Ombudsperson Good Scientific Practice and their representative are responsible for all related issues in this context.

Scientific policy advice
Scientific policy advice is part of the IAB's legal mandate and plays an important role in the institute's day-to-day work. Among the versatile science-based counselling services IAB provides are written statements on enquiries, applications or propositions from politics as well as the participation in political and parliamentary hearings. Good policy counselling has to master numerous tasks. It involves a great deal of responsibility and high standards.
It is the responsibility of IAB to always provide independent and high-quality counselling. For this purpose, IAB set clear principles for themselves with their Guidelines of Good Scientific Policy Advice (PDF, not freely accessible), and subsequently with the Concept on the Safeguarding of the Quality of Scientific Policy Advice (PDF, not freely accessible), they committed themselves to principles of quality assurance and concrete measures for their implementation.
Third-party funding counselling
Raising third-party funds, i.e. the acceptance of research assignments, but above all raising funds from research promotion has a strategic importance for IAB. Third-party funds expand the opportunities to fulfil the legal mandates of the institute and to strengthen the institute's networking activities with the expert audience and other scientific institutes.
The Research Coordination administrative department informs internally about third-party funding, current tenders and developments in the research funding landscape. Research Coordination supports the IAB researchers with applications for third-party funding and with the management of externally funded collaborative projects and international cooperation.
