Women and families seeking refuge* Literature overview on gender and family-related aspects of forced migration and integration

Abstract

"Although the media discourse about refugees in Germany focusses mainly on young men, women represent about half of all refugees on an international scale. In addition to that, more than half of the refugees are children and adolescents who are alone or arrive with family members (Freedman 2010: 595; Hess et al. 2016: 178; UNHCR 2018: 3). These circumstances, however, are only partially represented in the current arrival figures of refugees in countries such as Germany: Among the protection seekers who arrived in Germany between January 2013 and January 2016, three quarters were men, and the share of minors was below 30 % (Brücker, Rother and Schupp, 2016). The fact that a comparatively low number of women and children seeks protection in Germany indicates that the specific context of the flight plays an important role." (Text excerpt, IAB-Doku) ((en))
