Further training in establishments in Berlin - what one sees
Abstract
This article examines structural change in the Berlin economy and comments on the results of the IAB Establishment Panel on the topic of further in-house training. "All in all, it can be said that the initiatives of Berlin establishments towards further in-house training has in general increased; however there are considerable deficits as regards individual branches and groups of persons. For instance, further training activities and qualification structures in the building industry, consumer services and individual branches of industry such as the electrical industry point to a considerable requirement in further training. Special support for small and middle-sized enterprises is necessary. Further training should be intensified for workers with low levels of skills, women caring for children, and migrants. In view of the fact that the working population is getting older and working lives longer, further training for older employees in all establishments and branches is central if the economic competitiveness of Berlin's economy is to be ensured."
