Older workers in the labour force: late-career employment stability is associated with extended working lives

Abstract

"Over the last decade, in Germany the labour market participation of older workers saw increases not only in the pre-retirement age, but also beyond the statutory retirement age 65+. While individual drivers and motives of labour supply received significant attention from scholars, little is known about the role of pre-retirement employment patterns and industries for the employment situation of working retirees. Thus, we take a closer look at employment and transitions of individuals before and after the statutory retirement age 65+ and investigate wage stability, job characteristics, and the extent of employer mobility."
