The German labour market - a brief overview
Abstract
"The article gives a brief overview of an introductory presentation given by the author at the Heidelberger Gespräche (Heidelberg Talks) on 30 October, 2018. It addresses the general situation, structural problems and future challenges of the German labour market and examines certain aspects of them. Overall, the labour market proves to be in good shape at the time of the presentation. This is reflected, among other things, in a drop in the number of registered unemployed and an increase in employment. There continue nonetheless to be structural problems, some of them long-standing, and future challenges, some of which are addressed in the article. Examples include the enduringly high labour market risks faced by low-skilled workers. Moreover, the labour force is expected to decline in the medium and long term, which will have a substantial impact on labour supply even in the case of strong (net) immigration. The challenges of digitalisation in the world of work are becoming clear, as the potential for substitution might affect occupations in very different ways. The integration of long-term unemployed into the labour market also remains a challenge. The long-term unemployed are often affected by different obstacles that hamper integration. The article is inevitably limited to a few aspects selected for the presentation and refers to further literature." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
