Regional disparities and labour migration : Implications for regional policy in Germany
Abstract
"The author observes significant regional disparities in labour market conditions in Germany accompanied by heavy outward migration from lagging regions. While theoretical models provide no clear cut implications for the effects of migration on regional disparities, empirical analysis indicates that migration tends to reduce disparities. Selective migration might, however, counteract the reduction of regional differences in labour market conditions. The persistence of regional disparities and the possibility of cumulative processes caused by outward migration of highly skilled workers from lagging regions make a case for an effective regional policy and coordination with labour market policy."
