Entry into the labour market by those graduating from universities of applied sciences : findings from the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel

Abstract

"The transition between higher education and the labour market has a central significance in the career biographies of graduates. For the universities, furthermore, the labour market success of their graduates is an important criterion for success in the field of teaching. All in all, it is apparent that the graduates from the universities in Kiel are very successful in entering the labour market. After only a very short time they find a regular job which usually corresponds well to their level of qualification. Personal characteristics, the subject studied, the type of final qualification, and their performance during their studies have an effect on entry into the labour market, especially the type of first job and the entry salary. More than 50 per cent of the graduates take on their first job in the region where the university is situated. For the University of Kiel, it is important to note that many of these students have already gained substantial work experiences in establishments in the region of the university before they got their final degree."
