Marriage migration as closely spaced changes in status : an investigation on the basis of case studies

Abstract

"For over 40 years, subsequent immigration of a spouse has been the dominant form of immigration from Turkey. At the same time, women who have immigrated because of marriage are the worst integrated. What are the reasons for the frequently noticed difficulties in finding one's way in Germany? Jan F. C. Gellermann pursues this question from the perspective of socialisation and life course. By reconstructing cases on the basis of narrated biographical interviews and after evaluation of data on life courses from generation to generation, he comes to the conclusion that integration problems are also a consequence of habit and are to a great extent dependent upon the socialisation experience within families and within certain milieux. In addition, an essential factor is the way migration processes take place, especially the many changes in status which must be coped with in a short time. The study is situated at the intersection between family, socialisation and migration research and is directed towards researchers as well as practitioners in the field of integration, education and social work."
