Start-ups by migrants: A path towards economic and social integration

Abstract

"In comparison to other countries, there are not many start-ups in Germany. This is shown by the 'Global Entrepreneurship Monitor' (GEM) of 2010 which thus also confirms earlier results. What is remarkable is that migrants tend to set up their own businesses more often than local people. In doing so, they have specific advantages. For example it is tendentially easier for them to export their products and services. In addition there are signs that they have more role models than local start-up entrepreneurs. However there is also indication that start-ups by migrants are often a reaction to their comparatively poor chances on the labour market." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
