Basic competencies of adults in Germany: Once learned, never forgotten?

Abstract

"Since the first PISA study, the basic cognitive competencies of students are subject to regular testing. In contrast to that, our knowledge of the competencies of the adult population in Germany is rather restricted. The IAB-survey 'Working and Learning in a Changing World' (ALWA) should be considered a first step towards closing this gap. The results presented here show that the reading and numeracy skills of adults are essentially related to their formal qualifications, their labour market participation and to the language that was spoken in their parental home."
