Economic integration of migrants in Germany

Abstract

"The economic integration of migrants is a key concern, especially in attempting to counteract the impact of demographic change and the impending labor shortage by migration. Moreover, a successful labor market integration acts as one of the most important integration mechanisms in modern labor market societies. In this context, the dissertation evaluates economic integration of migrants in Germany from various perspectives. First, Hanna Brenzel shows that differences in job mobility influence wage trajectories of migrants and natives which, in turn, contribute to wage differentials. Next, she documents the fact that the immigrant-native wage gap is influenced by different personality traits. Last, her work demonstrates that there are differences between single and family migrants concerning their respective labor market integration processes. Building on these three main findings, Brenzel not only fosters the understanding of wage differentials, but also broadens the current knowledge about the labor market integration of often neglected groups by bringing them to the fore."
