Abstract

"Adult education is an increasingly important component of the educational systems of many nations and comprises a growing share of the total volume of educational attainment. In this entry, various conceptualizations of adult education are discussed and its relationship to lifelong learning is explained. The increasing relevance of adult education for persistent patterns of social inequality is examined and some of the challenges and benefits in conducting comparative studies of adult education are indicated."
