Classification of occupations 2010 : developments and results
Abstract
A central prerequisite for statistical reporting and likewise for the scientific analysis of occupational structures is an appropriate, up-to-date classification of occupations. This report presents the new 2010 classification of occupations (KldB 2010); it replaces the occupational classification of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) and of the Federal Statistical Office as of 2011. The new 2010 classification of occupations has been set up as a hierarchical classification with five numerically coded levels. At the uppermost level in the hierarchy, the occupations are classified into ten areas. This classification covers professional affinity to a certain occupation as the horizontal dimension, and the level of requirements as the vertical dimension. With its theoretical definition of terms, its empirical cluster analysis, and its calculations of homogeneity, it constitutes a new systematisation of occupational activities. It takes into consideration the particular features of the national labour market with its pronounced occupation-specific structuring and in addition exhibits a close affiliation with the international occupational classification ISCO-08.
