IAB-BAMF-SOEP surveys of refugees 2016 : design of the studies, field results, as well as analyses of school and occupational qualifications, language skills and cognitive potential

Abstract

"This publication presents the initial findings of the study "Geflüchtete Familien" (Refugee families, GeFam), a sub-study of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP study of refugees, that was developed by researches from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Forschungszentrums des Bundesamtes für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF-FZ) and the Socioeconomic Panels (SOEP) at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). The GeFam study is based on a longitudinal study of 4,816 adult refugees and their 5,717 children. The study is mainly financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and from the research budget of the IAB.<br> Of the adult refugees who entered Germany between 1 January 2013 and 31 January 2016, 64 per cent said they had a school-leaving certificate, 20 per cent of those university-level qualifications or had completed an occupational training. Almost 40 per cent of the refugees surveyed took part in an integration course of the Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Along with the level of education on entry to Germany, educational aspirations, language skills and participation in integration courses were also topics covered by the survey" (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
