Concepts of labour market placement and labour market integration of migrants in Europe : a comparison between the United Kingdom, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany. Documentation

Abstract

The presentation discusses the labour market integration of migrants, both men and women, measured against central indicators such as the employment and unemployment rates, and considers the question of what contribution job placement and job promotion - that is, active labour market policies - can provide to improve the labour market integration of immigrants. Here four countries are compared: Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany. A number of promising approaches are derived from the country comparison and these are then discussed. Among them are the following: access to the labour market as early as possible; language courses jointly with work experience; binding integration agreements with recent immigrants; in-house traineeships and integration subsidies; placement strategies geared to individual needs for support; recognition of foreign qualifications; the improvement of language skills.
