Subsidized employment for the long-term unemployed : experiencing integration on the fringe of the working society
Abstract
"Using the employment subsidy as an example, Philipp Ramos Lobato examines whether publically subsidized employment can contribute to improving the social integration of the long-term unemployed. In doing so, he shifts the perspective of those persons subsidized to the foreground. With the help of biographical narrative interviews, he analyses the importance that being integrated into a job and the status of employment have for these persons. In eight individual cases, the author works out under which conditions such an improvement can be successful. To this extent, the study offers important clues of how subsidized employment might be purposefully organized; at the same time, however, it shows the limitations of such approaches to subsidization."
