Limited inclusion on account of higher employment risks : an empirical overview of groups especially at risk

Abstract

"Having employment is of fundamental importance if social inclusion is to be possible. For most people, and for the family members dependent upon them, paid employment is not only a vital source of maintaining one's livelihood in a material sense; wellbeing, social status and life chances in general also essentially depend on whether, the extent to which, and under which conditions people are engaged in paid employment. Against this background, unemployment is often perceived as a critical phase in one's individual life course. The effect that this experience with unemployment can have on individual and family wellbeing depends primarily on how long the period of unemployment lasts. In general the following applies: the longer the period of unemployment, the more difficult it is to find employment that will support one's livelihood and the greater the disadvantages of potential consequences for those affected.<br> This article deals with groups of persons whose opportunities of inclusion are limited on account of greater employment risks. The extent to which this is the case, what these risks consist of and how employment risks develop over the course of time are then explained using a selection of empirical findings."
