The labor market impact of migration: Native workers benefit from immigration

Abstract

"Based on a novel approach which considers imperfect labor markets we analyze the labor market effects of immigration into Germany from 1980 to 2004. We find that native workers benefit from immigration in terms of higher wages and lower unemployment risk. In contrast, foreign workers loose substantially. The labor market impact of immigration depends on the skill level of the immigrants. Consequently, the German labor market could benefit from skill selective immigration policies."
