The German labour market puzzle in the Great Recession

Abstract

"This chapter first aims to highlight Germany's particular productivity and employment development paths in a macroeconomic overview. Next, reasons for Germany's reaction to the economic recession and its particular development patterns will be highlighted. Germany's ┐jobs miracle┐ will be discussed in this context, thereby putting a specific focus on the relation of productivity development and employment development. We assess that the specific institutional setting of Germany's labour market has contributed to the way Germany was able to deal with the crisis. Thus, this chapter's main emphasis lies on industrial relations. Their institutional set-up will be described and their effects on employment and productivity will be investigated empirically using the IAB-Establishment Panel Survey. Results will be discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions will be drawn from the analyses." (Text excerpt, IAB-Doku) ((en))
