Employment and working time patterns of couples

Abstract

"Women's employment has continuously increased in recent years. At present almost half of the total employed persons in Germany are women. Therefore it does appear that woman have equal chances as man for participation in the workforce. However, the headcount alone reveals little about work intensity, because the different length of working time is not taken into account. Taking the working hours as a benchmark, there clearly exist gender differences. The high proportion of part time women leads to a pronounced working time gap between women and men. In conjunction with analyses of the employment and working time patterns of couples it is shown, that especially in case of children the differences in the extent of employment are strengthening. Even if the Distribution of division of labour between couples would be based on their individual working time preferences there would be little change within the intra-household Division of labour."
