Wage convergence between immigrants and natives in Germany : The social environment sets the direction

Abstract

"This study investigates the impact of social and ethnic environment on the wage gap between immigrants and natives in Germany. Using the IAB-SOEP migration sample together with the administrative data, the empirical analysis reveals several new insights. Immigrants living in areas with high ethnic human capital exhibit on average lower wage gap compared to natives. In contrast, the social environment with low ethnic human capital as well as higher ethnic concentration are associated with higher wage gap between immigrants and natives."
