Abstract

"The paper analyses the employment in the environmental sector by using a new methodology which is based on the establishment panel of the Institute of Employment Research (IAB). In 1999 about 913 000 persons were employed in the environmental sector in Germany. The firms expect a dynamic development in the fields of environmental research, consulting and monitoring equipment and analytical services. Especially in these fields the requirements concerning the qualification of the employees are very high so that the environmental sector will be strongly affected by a lack of skilled labour."
