The establishment panel of the German Institute for Employment Research

Abstract

"The paper describes the panel approach in western Germany, its feasibility and results. The first wave of the panel on firms has been conducted during the summer season 1993 in a sample of firms taken for all branches and firm sizes. The sample was drawn out of the firm register of the employment statistics of the Federal Employment Services, which covers all establishments/firms employing at least one employee under social security. Almost 80 % of total employment is covered. The Infratest Research Institute did personal interviews in 4.360 establishments; the response rate was more than 72 % and interviews were stopped simply for cost reasons. The non-response rate ws slightly higher in those strata which are difficult to interview, that is in establishments with 1-4 and 5-9 employees or those in construction industries and in services."
