Regional determinants of gender specific wages
Abstract
"The paper relates gender specific wages to the conditions on regional labour markets. The markets are assumed to be segmented according to gender. The theoretical background of the analysis is derived from the European Labour Market Model and the "wage curve" hypothesis. The empirical analyses with multilevel models use data for western Germany from the IAB Employment Sample and from the unemployment statistics. The results show that gender specific wage differences can be attributed partly to the conditions on regional labour markets. For the explanation of the remaining part processes of discrimination have to be taken into consideration. The regional disparities in wages are larger for female employees than for males and have a differing structure." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
