The use of analysis with longitudinal data at the Bundesanstalt für Arbeit (Federal Employment Institute) in Germany
Abstract
Drawing on three evaluations the importance of longitudinal studies is demonstrated. In every case the status of people has to be checked at two or more different points in time. Most evaluation studies interviewed people attending special training schemes. Then, after a considerable time interval, they are interviewed a second time and it is possible to assess the effectiveness of the respective schemes. The value of longitudinal data to the policy process is the reason for the increasing number of panel studies carried out at our institute. In the last two years the institute has started two different panel studies with data about firms and a special labour market monitor about young people. I would like to conclude by saying that we are very interested in longitudinal research in other countries. The research with longitudinal data in the UK presented at this conference is very impressive. There are no cohort studies of comparable scope and design in Germany. (IAB2) ((en))
