Employment and unemployment in the labour market areas of West and East Germany
Abstract
"The contribution considers employment and unemployment in the labour market areas of West and East Germany. One finds that regional employment rates and regional unemployment rates correlate negatively in the old Länder. This confirms the hypothesis that regional employment opportunities are a contributary factor for regional participation in employment. In the new Länder such a relationship is found to be weak or is not found at all. Particularly the willingness of women to work is still high in spite of the unfavourable labour market situation. The different reactions in participatory behaviour affect the evidence and the comparability of regional unemployment rates in the east and in the west. The major deficit in the west is that the "quiet reserve" is not recorded, the jajor deficit in the east is that the alleviating impacts of labour market policy are not registered."
