Gainful employment and the inter-generational contract
Abstract
"Several years with low birth rates and a consistent rise in life expectancy are causing a tremendous aging of the population not only in Germany, but in almost all western and central European countries. The 'greying society' is becoming a popular watchword. If there are less young and more old people this means that fewer working persons must support more and more non-working persons or - in other words - that there will be drastically fewer shoulders to bear an increasing burden. This, in particular, causes some people to cite horror scenarios for the continued validity of the inter-generational contract.<br> This paper strives to explain that an altogether pessimistic view is unjustified. There are a number of strategic approaches to meet the challenge. This presupposes, however, that adequate measures are taken in policxy, industry and society starting today."
