Fixed-term employment and labour market flexibility

Abstract

"The paper deals with fixed-term contracts as one specific form of an employment relationship. It presents a brief review of theoretical contributions towards a labour market theory including the duration of labour contracts, which is then viewed against the background of data of Germany making use of the Socio-economic Panel Study East and West (SOEP). Two basic questions are dealt with. (1) Who is most likely to be employed on a fixed-term basis? (2) After accounting for various other characteristics: Do employees with a fixed-term contract have lower earnings than employees with indefinite work contracts?"
