Public employment placement systems and their influence on job searches and success in finding employment

Abstract

"The current study shines light on the role of public job placement service and advisory and placement support in relation to the way the unemployed look for jobs and their success in finding them. As the comparison with Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia shows, in active labour market policy Austria did not follow the path towards a general shift in emphasis to shorter and comparatively budget-friendly placement-orientated measures, but rather, up to the present, has laid a strong emphasis on educational and qualificational measures. In addition, significant differences can be registered between the concrete placement practices of the Austrian Labour Market Service (AMS Österreich) and the public services of other countries. According to a detailed study, the Austrian Labour Market Service is a definitive factor in the search undertaken by the unemployed and has a significant effect on the intensity and success of their efforts to find a job."
