Mothers receiving unemployment-benefit-II : Duration and chances to end the status of being in need

Abstract

Lone parents and two-parent-families differ according to poverty-risks and claiming of social benefits. The following paper examines mothers duration of unemployment-benefit-II-reception with administrative data and estimates the chances to leave this welfare system. The analysis focuses on how child care responsibilities and individual labour market opportunities influence the chances to end the status of being in need. Special attention is paid to the question whether these factors operate differently for both types of households. Child care responsibilities constrain lone parents to a higher degree while two parent families have a structural advantage which is due to the presence of two adults in the household.
