Forschung und Innovation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Abstract
"This article analyses various measures of research and innovation activity and their relation to structural attributes such as firm size and economic sectors at the level of the German federal states (Bundesländer). We firstly describe different input (i.e. R&D expenditures) and output (e.g. patents) measures particularly with regard to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Secondly, we assess the effects of firm-specific and region-specific determinants on research and innovation activities by multiple regression analysis at the firm level. Our empirical results indicate a significant and theoretically expected influence for various firm-specific variables such as firm size, age, skill structure, legal form and branch of firm's activity. However, even after firm-specific control characteristics are taken into account there remains a slightly negative effect for the dummy variable indicating firm's location in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern."
