Reactions of the EU to youth unemployment
Abstract
"The current article examines the reasons that might be responsible for a higher unemployment rate among young persons and young adults. Some of the basic facts relating to youth unemployment in Europe are then discussed against this background. It becomes apparent that there is a strong correlation between the change in youth unemployment and the change in unemployment in general. Recent research confirms that youth unemployment leaves scars which continue to have an effect throughout a person's entire working life. This is why, especially in the European crisis states, the situation gives rise to the fear of substantial negative long-term effects, both economic and social. The prospects for success of possible labour market policy instruments of the European Union are discussed in this context." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
