A surplus of commuters despite a good supply of apprenticeships in the eastern part of Germany : an increased competition for junior employees increases pressure on rural regions

Abstract

"The demand for training positions which has dropped strongly because of demographic reasons means that many regions in the eastern German states exhibit an availability of training positions that is clearly above the overall German average. In the wake of this easing of tension, the rates of trainees commuting out of the area have declined in many eastern German regions, but nevertheless the number of those commuting outwards is generally higher than the number of persons commuting inwards. This article shows which eastern German regions are particularly affected by a surplus of persons commuting outwards, despite a good supply of trainee positions." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
