Family policy and mothers returning to employment : an analysis using data from the Socioeconomic Panel (SOEP)

Abstract

"The current paper examines to what extent statutory regulations regarding time spent looking after the family have an effect on the duration of employment interruptions after the birth of a child and/or the point of time of the re-entry of mothers into employment. Following this introduction, the chapter is structured as follows: First, in Section 4.2, a brief overview is given of the development of the regulations relating to the interruption of unemployment after the birth of a child that are being focussed on. After that, Section 4.3 present patterns of women's and mothers' employment in Germany as have been observed over the last years; this will enable us to bring the findings into a relationship with the overall framework. The results from selected studies on the duration of employment interruptions are presented in Section 4.4. Section 4.5 provides an introduction to SOEP data (data from the Socioeconomic Panel) and to the methods of how the interruptions in employment are analysed. The results of the descriptive and multivariate analyses are discussed in Section 4.6. The last section contains a summarizing critical appraisal." (Text excerpt, IAB-Doku)
