On the increasing significance of occupational commuting - new freedoms or a forced necessity?

Abstract

Proceeding from the empirical diagnosis for Germany, various aspects of the topic 'commuting on the labour market' are presented against the background of opportunities and risks and/or freedom and compulsion. Along with aggregated analyses, studies on micro-substantiations are also discussed and the connections between recent theoretical approaches to commuters from municipal and employment economics shown. "The findings presented prove that commuting on the labour market has become more significant.' This is caused by the loss of a place of work or training in one's home community. 'It is indisputable that commuting opens up a great many opportunities for employees to find a place for work that suits their individual needs. Nevertheless, the risks caused by the high stress that daily or weekly commuting brings with it must also be taken into account." (IAB2)
