Quality of work in a state of flux
Abstract
"As the remarks in this article have shown, a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of work and employment cannot be undertaken in isolation from the living circumstances of those employed. In particular with a view to discussions on precarity and risks of poverty, the systematic inclusion of the living and household context of employees in such studies on the quality of employment would seem imperative. The extent to which persons in employment experience particular aspects of their employment as positive, as a burden, or as existence-threatening depends closely on what financial and social resources they have at their disposal outside the area of their employment. Finally, in addition, the examination of quality of work also requires a dynamic perspective. Findings concerning the circumstances in which precarious employment relationships can serve as a springboard to qualitatively better jobs or lead to a dead end can best be gained through the empirical investigation of the quality of work over the life course and the course of employment."
