In-house dynamics and flexibilisation on the German labour market

Abstract

"On account of the progressive globalisation, technical and organisational change and demographic challenges, establishments have to meet higher demands in flexibility." Against this background, the authors first examine the increased requirement for flexibility faced by establishments and then explain the possibilities that establishments have of varying employment, working time, and wages. This includes an increase in atypical employment relationships. Presented in detail is the way employment has developed in the areas of part-time work; marginal part-time work; temporary employment; and temporary agency work. "But even normal working relationships offer starting points for the tapping of flexibility potential." The change in normal working relationships has been shown in particular by the spread of working time accounts, the use of the instrument of short-time work, as well as agreements within the framework of in-house alliances aimed at securing employment and the location.
