The demographic development releases tension on the market for traineeships and reduces the pressure to be mobile for eastern German trainees

Abstract

"In summary, it can be said that the regional mobility of trainees is still today contributing to balancing out disparities on the labour market. However, when comparing the years before and after the demographic pressure on the east German market for apprentices dropped, the rates of persons commuting have decreased noticeably everywhere. To find a trainee position today, young people in east Germany no longer need to commute so often or so far as they did a number of years ago. Having said that, regional differences, such as those between urban and rural regions or between the west and east of Germany, still essentially exist." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
